Since the closing credits of "Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead" rolled across my television screen a week ago, I've been patiently waiting for my fancy shmancy Breville Ikon 900 to arrive. The movie totally shocked and inspired The Boyfriend and I. If you haven't seen the film yet, you should definitely do so! You can watch it for free on Netflix, or if you don't have an account and live in the US, you can also watch it right here. It's the incredible story of Australian native Joe Cross who had fallen prey to an overly-stressful and indulgent lifestyle, which led to obesity, lethargy, and a chronic autoimmune disorder. He decided he was just about through living life that way and started on a 60-day juice fast (woah). A little extreme, yes, but so were his ailments. When the 2 months were up, he had lost an incredible amount of weight and -- get this -- cured his chronic illness! That, coupled with the incredible detox power of juice fasting, and the hope of losing some of the post-college weight that I've collected over the years, was more than the invitation I needed to join the party. I jumped on Amazon the next day, found an awesome deal on the same juicer Joe uses in the film, and made it official -- juice fast, here I come.
For the past week, T.B. (The Boyfriend) and I have been excitedly collecting recipes and plotting our start date -- this Sunday (I figured that a little church time at the beginning of our 2-week fast would inspire us). T.B. is still a bit skeptical. He was all-in until I reminded him today that coffee was out of the question. But when we unwrapped the juicer tonight, we were both so jazzed to try it out that we decided to christen it by fashioning a bit of a Juicy Adult Beverage.
"Bre" the Breville, in all her juicy glory.
We made a mostly-fruit juice (which we won't actually be doing once we start the fast -- we'll try to keep it 2:1 veggies to fruit) aaaaand added a bit of vodka to celebrate the occasion. Definitely a no-no once the fast starts. This juice was honeydew (oh, my, yum), cucumber and pineapple, all organic. We didn't end up using the orange juice because the Breville yielded way more juice than we were expecting -- filled the pitcher right up to the top!
The maiden voyage...
Here it comes!
And there we are! A super-light, refreshing, and mildly sweet Juicy Adult Beverage that tastes strongly of fresh cucumber and honeydew, topped with a couple of mint leaves. Every time we took a sip, we got a lovely whiff of mint from the twin's picking garden. An incredible way to kick off the fast!
I'll let you know how it goes once we get this thing started for real... like, when our drinks consist of a lot more leafy greens and a lot less alcohol. Wish us luck!
